My First Blog Post

Hi. My name is Cat and you’re reading my very first blog post.

Thanks. It’s nice to have you.

I’m new to this whole public journaling idea so feel free to come and bear with me or go elsewhere as you please.  I’m blogging because I was encouraged by a friend to do so and so after much procrastination, I have. Way to cave into peer pressure, I know. I enjoy writing from time to time and have gotten more into it as of lately but I have never been a faithful journal-er, or avid reader for that matter. I don’t know who might read this or why, other than obligated family members and my roommates after much harassment, but I guess my true intention with this blog is to put my writing out there and test it on actual readers. So basically, these are my thoughts,  in no particular order, with no particular topic.

My hope for this blog is to be short, manageable articles (for my sanity and yours) on varying topics that relate to my life…. I guess that’s pretty much what any blog is.  I hope to get your feedback from this and I hope this blogging stuff encourages me to be creative and productive with my spare time. It has the added bonus of keeping my mum semi informed since she so gently pointed out last week that if I don’t constantly keep her updated she naturally assumes my life in the “big-city-fast-lane” consists of heavy drinking, stranger’s cocaine and unplanned pregnancies. I assured her that I only accept cocaine from friends.  We will see how long this blog lasts I guess, but I am committed. I hope I can convince you to be too!

Before I begin, and so you can understand how to receive my writing, I think it’s only fair you know a bit about me and who I am;

1. I am normal. For all intensive purposes of this blog and for you the reader, I am average. I am your typical everyday 23 year old woman. I’m a 5’4, Caucasian, blond hair, green eyed, generally sarcastic yet, upbeat, friendly, quirky, semi-flakey, opinionated, fairly foul-mouthed, open-minded girl. I’m nice enough but pretty direct, with a slight hippy kick (but more the “laid-back, ride-a-bike, let’s-get-high, be-a-good-person, to-each-his-own” hippy and less the “let’s-all-walk-around-bare-foot-with-soft-melodic-voices, I-don’t-need-to-shower-or-shave, orgy-having, live-in-the-trees” kind of hippy).  I am of average intelligence, wit, looks and lifestyle. I grew up in the country outside of Ottawa with two parents and a younger brother. I had a very happy, comfortable childhood. I moved to Toronto when I was 18 and became a bonified city chick. I live with two female roommates, who I like, in a nice part of town.

2. I am an artist. I’m an unemployed actor with a great sense of humor and irony, currently auditioning and writing in Toronto. I keep busy and pay the bills doing tech gigs on the side for TV, film and concerts and to avoid the hell that is waiting tables. Within this job I am “just one of the guys”.  I also nurture a desire to learn how to produce and create my own work but that’s newer and slightly more terrifying- hence, my procrastination blog.

3. I am vegan. I only bring this one up because I foresee it being the topic of some of my posts. It’s not what defines me and pretty much doesn’t infringe on any of my day to day activity or anyone else’s, although my mother is probably disagreeing right now. Most people don’t even notice until they offer me something to ingest and I decline politely and then have to answer “but why?” I have been this way for 2 ½ years. Before that, I was a vegetarian for a year. Basically, it comes down to this; I like being alive and I do my best to appreciate life. My body responded well to the cutbacks I made and it made sense to me that I encourage my body to perform at its greatest ability. Eating a vegan diet allows it to do that. I also try to show my gratitude for my life and so I choose to live causing as little damage and bringing as little harm as possible to those who cross my path. In the end I see the greater benefit lies within a vegan lifestyle and outweighs the loss of animal product in my diet. I understand it’s not an adoption made as easily for everyone. I’m not a crazy vegan with pamphlets, I just rather know that I live the best way I can and know how. I’m sure I’ll go into more detail later.

4. I enjoy developing a curiosity for God, faith and religion. I do so very carefully. I’m not crazy religious, nor do I come from a strict religious family or upbringing, nor do I faithfully practice every day.  I was raised in the Catholic Church, my mother is Baptist and my father is Roman Catholic. I was always encouraged to cultivate my curiosity about God, be good person, tell the truth and do the right thing. Just for background- I did attend a Catholic Elementary school and a Public High school. I do pray. I’m not entirely convinced anyone listens and I don’t get down on my knees beside my bed but I like the idea of God and receiving help and knowing that sometimes, it might not be my fault.  I just find there is less pressure and more fun when a potential deity is responsible. Ultimately, for me, it’s about being curious about all things larger than myself and having faith that there must be a bigger picture and I am part of it.

5. For your further education, here are ten random facts about me that are completely irrelevant;
#1. I hate heights. So I also hate roller coasters, apartment balconies, fairest wheels, see-through elevators, diving boards and going over bridges. I also hate bees, but I don’t think that has anything to do with heights. Ironically, I have always wanted to skydive and will at some point.
#2. I can sing along to the radio and read a book at the same time.
#3. I can’t rollerblade because my feet are too ticklish. It’s not the skate or the pavement. We’ve tried.
#4. I don’t consider myself superstitious but I do pick up pennies, knock on wood and make wishes on 11:11 clocks and the first star I see at night.
#5. I don’t like popcorn but I love kernels.
#6. I once locked myself out of my hotel room mid-shower in a tiny towel and suds. Figure that one out!
#7. My favorite thing is flowers.
#8. I cannot figure out the order of the Alphabet without starting at the beginning.
#9. I can’t whistle, despite spending most of my childhood and young adult life practicing.
#10. I’m very clumsy. I fall over or trip on a weekly basis.
#11. I am cold almost all the time.
#12. I dream vividly every night and often wake up tired from the effort and commitment I put into my subconscious life. I try to stop.

So, there you go. A little bit about me and my very first blog article. Thanks for getting to the bottom of it. Tune in next time!
Be a sponge,
Cat xxx
